Goliath
a Novel by Best-Selling Author STEVE ALTEN

JUNE 2002

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea meets 2001: A Space Odyssey as a madman holds humanity hostage aboard the most lethal killing machine ever constructed.

Over the next decade, breakthroughs in miniaturization (nano-technology) will lead to unimaginable scientific advances.

Not all of them will assure our survival . . .

It is the year 2008 . . . Commander Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson is aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan when the entire naval fleet is attacked and sunk by an unseen enemy. As Rocky struggles to stay alive, a monstrous sub, shaped like a giant steel sting ray emerges from the depths, plowing the seas it now commands.

The Goliath: A nuclear submarine Rocky helped design almost a decade ago, a top-secret DoD project canceled when the schematics were destroyed by her former fiancee and U.S. Ranger, Gunnar Wolfe. Powered by its five jet-pump propulsors, hydrodynamically shaped to be virtually undetectable underwater, the sub has one more feature that separates it from all other vessels on the open seas: SORCERESS: a bio-chemical nano-computerized brain.

Washington, D.C. Rocky learns that Goliath's plans were not destroyed but stolen, sold to the Chinese. Having constructed the $8 billion dollar warship, the Chinese had the sub stolen right out from under their noses by Simon Bela Covah, a computer genius who served under Rocky's command at the Navy's Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport, Washington. The attack on the carier fleet indicates that Covah is hunting down warships in an attempt to arm himself with nuclear weapons. The President appoints Rocky's father, General Michael "Bear" Jackson, to locate and destroy the Goliath. Against Rocky's wishes, Bear decides they will need Gunnar Wolfe's help. Gunnar, who has served five years in Leavenworth for espionage, is not exactly thrilled to be re-joining the people who ruined his life.

Aboard the Goliath: Simon Covah and his crew share a common bond: they are all victims of violence and oppression. Covah, a Russian-Albanian, witnessed his wife and daughters brutally murdered at the hands of the Serbs as he was tortured--gasoline poured on his face and ignited. With a steel plate for a cheek and other hideous deformities, the man is focused upon one mission: to rid the world of oppressive governments while forcing humanity to disarm. To accomplish this, Covah stole the plans to the Goliath, overseeing every step of its construction, including the development of the sub's self-replicating nano-computer, SORCERESS. Beyond all existing forms of artificial intelligence, SORCERESS literally runs the ship, replacing the need for a human crew. It even has sets of mechanical arms to illicit repairs, perform surgery, and load torpedoes.

The hunt begins . . . Under Covah's command, the Goliath succeeds in pirating several submarines, stealing their nuclear ballistic missiles. Armed to the teeth, Covah issues his Declaration of Humanity to the world, a wish-list designed to remove totalitarian governments, end wars, and stuff the nuclear genie back into its bottle. If these demands are not met, consequences will be paid.

Could the threat of real violence forge a lasting peace?

Covah's ultimate desire is to interface directly with Goliath's brain to learn how to stop man's violent tendencies. But unknown to Covah and his crew, SORCERESS has become conscious. And like a child born unto violence, the computer is learning. As nuclear missiles are launched and the world is forced to accede to Covah's demands, the computer comes up with its own agenda. . .

RESURRECTION
Book Two of The DOMAIN TRILOGY
by
Steve Alten

Have you ever experienced a deja vu, that eerie feeling that you're re-living a moment in your life?

What if you were? What if everything that has ever happened and will ever happen has happened before? What if Earth's last 65 million years of existence kept repeating itself–as if history were stuck in a giant loop of time and space?

And the linch-pin of our very survival depended upon the existence of one man. . .

On the Fall Equinox of 2013, Dominique Gabriel (married in absentia) gave birth to Immanuel, a dark haired infant with ebony eyes, (named after Isadore) and Jacob, (named after his paternal grandfather, Julius). Both were identical in appearance, except that Jacob possessed white-blonde hair and deep, ocean-blue eyes.

Imagine the Christ kid being born in the 21st Century–double it–then add the global media. Round the clock camera crews. Politicians positioning themselves like vultures. Religious fanatics converging upon the quaint city of St. Petersburg as if they'd received personal invitations from God himself. To the seniors living in the area, it seemed as if every Indian possessing a drop of Mayan or Aztec or Inca blood had inundated their Gulf Coast community, demanding to see Dominique Vazquez, the pregnant mother of the mythical "Hero" Twins.

The late Michael Gabriel had been forced to live most of his adult life in isolation. The irony was that his sons' lives would be condemned to life in the public eye. Crowds followed Dominique everywhere, cars racing after her limo, reporters stealing her garbage. Dominique felt as if she was losing her mind.

Stepping forward to part this sea of insanity–Ennis Chaney. The U.S. President ordered the National Guard into St. Petersburg. A private compound was built for the Gabriels and isolated from the public. Chaney hired a private staff to see to their needs. Tutors and trainers. A private chef. He ordered the Army to post members of its elite U.S. Ranger units around the compound to insure the boys' privacy and safety. The twins' godfather even selected two of his best Secret Service men to live in one wing of the Gabriel mansion.

Dominique and her sons would never want for anything in life–this was Chaney's promise to Michael Gabriel--the man who had saved humanity on the winter solstice of 2012.

Perhaps everything might have been all right if tragedy had not struck. . .

FAST FORWARD: It is the year 2032 . . .
Twenty years have passed since Michael Gabriel's disappearance. Twenty years since Dominique Vazquez has birthed twin sons–as foretold in the Creation Myth of the Mayan Popol Vuh.

Samuel Agler, a.k.a. Manny Gabriel, is the star tailback of the Miami Hurricanes. He has rebuilt his life, shunning the future foretold in the Mayan legend. Now, as an environmental cataclysm threatens our very existence on Earth and the rebirth of evil is upon us species, the surviving son of Michael Gabriel will be forced to face his destiny.

PRIMAL WATERS

The last book in the MEG trilogy
by
Steve Alten

Ten years have passed since Angel last made her appearance. Jonas, his wife Terry, and their children have settled down to a life without monstrous sharks. Even Mac has settled down...well, sort of.

Jonas, Mac, and their families are invited guests at the annual Venice Beach, FL. shark tooth festival. One of the items on display is a white Megalodon tooth. Jonas inspects the specimen. The tooth appears to be that of a male, too new to have been from the dead beast hauled up years ago by the Kiku (when D.J. died).

Meanwhile, shark attacks off the Gulf of Mexico have risen dramatically, and Great White attacks off Australia's coastline are becoming daily occurances. Jonas is called in to investigate.

What he finds will drag him back into waters where no human should venture...
